Rocky Reach Dam, Wenatchee Valley
On a whim I took the car up to Rocky Reach Dam. I thought I’d look a salmon in the eye, though I’m not sure they’re even around this time of year. There were plenty of other fish. In the powerhouse, I met the massive hum of the generators and it got into my bones. It’s in everyone’s bones, probably more than they realize. It’s the spirit of the place.
The Rocky Reach Hydro Electric project was undertaken by the Chelan County Public Utility district in the 1950s. Harnessing the renewable energy of the Columbia River, it powers over 7 million homes. The park is well kept and the gardens are really something. For a small donation, you can visit the museum; a great resource and probably one of the best kept secrets around.
